Laser Dentistry
For patients who do not look forward to needles, drilling, or numbness, Laser Dentistry may be the right choice.
New technologies become great new technologies when they change people’s lives. Laser dentistry is one of dentistry’s latest advances. The Solea dental laser operates at a unique wavelength with sophisticated, yet simple computer controls that enable high-speed, precision cutting on both hard and soft tissue. Solea works on everything from gingiva and dentin to enamel and bone.
Solea performs entirely differently than any laser before. Solea emits a 9.3 µm wavelength, which nears the peak absorption of (more or less enamel). The result? Solea actually vaporizes enamel, giving us the power to work anywhere in the oral cavity, from any angle, with speed and ease.
Laser dentistry can be used for both tooth and soft tissue related procedures. Oftentimes no local anesthesia is required. Unlike with the traditional dental handpiece, with laser dentistry there is no heat or vibration, making the procedure quite comfortable for most patients. For soft tissue (surgical) procedures it eliminates the need for suturing and healing is much faster.
We are excited to announce the incorporation of Laser Dentistry at Children’s Dentistry of Dublin, specifically the hard and soft tissue laser developed by Convergent Dental, known as Solea®. What is perhaps most extraordinary about the Solea® dental laser that distinguishes it from the others is the incredible amount of science and research that went into creating it. Most importantly for patients is that all the science and engineering resulted in an all-tissue dental laser that allows dentists to do a wide range of hard and soft tissue procedures reliably anesthesia-free and elevates the patient experience to an entirely new level.
A key property of the laser is a numbing effect that can preclude the need for local anesthetics. According to informal surveys of customers, 95% of procedures are anesthesia-free and 98% of patients report no pain! While few patients feel pain from the laser pulses, about half of them feel what they describe as cold. For anybody that has been to the dentist and had to get numb, this is a great trade off versus enduring local anesthetic or the subsequent numb feeling!
We are currently using the Solea® laser to perform many restorative procedures, such as fillings and expect to start using it for soft tissue procedures such as tongue and lip ties in the near future. Call the office to see if it is right for you!
Areas of dental care that benefit from laser technology:
- Decay removal and tooth restoration;
- Pediatric procedures;
- Lingual Frenectomy (lip-tie release) without anesthesia or sutures; and
- Maxillary Frenectomy (lip-tie release) without anesthesia or sutures.
